Understanding Minimum Order Quantities in Product Sourcing

A minimum order quantity (MOQ) is the smallest order a supplier is prepared to produce or sell under stated conditions. It can vary by product, material, colour, packaging, and production method, so it is worth confirming exactly what a quoted MOQ includes.

Ask what drives the minimum

Some minimums are related to material purchasing, setup time, packaging runs, or production efficiency. Ask whether the MOQ applies to the whole order or to each colour, size, design, or other variant. This helps you understand the actual commitment behind the number.

Compare total costs

A smaller quantity may have a higher unit price, while a larger run may require more cash and storage. Compare the total order cost, any setup or tooling charges, packaging, freight, and the amount of inventory you can reasonably sell or use.

Discuss options before changing specifications

Depending on the product, a supplier may offer alternatives such as standard materials, shared packaging, or a phased schedule. Ask for each option in writing and confirm that any change still meets your requirements.

The right order quantity balances unit economics with demand, cash flow, and storage. Avoid choosing a quantity on unit price alone.
